COVID-19 update

Golden Empire Council Covid-19 May 1st Update

As our community and local economy continues to address the public health crisis, we remain committed to supporting the delivery of Scouting to our local families.  Over the past weeks we have seen our Scouts and Scouters come together in ways never before imagined, continuing to offer outstanding programs for our youth.  The Golden Empire Council is continuing to monitor the situation.  As the health and safety of our Scouts is the most important thing to us, we will be following the government and local health department suggestions concerning re-opening our Council office and beginning to return to a more normal program.  For now, we know that our office will remain closed to the public through May 10th at which time we will update as needed.

BUT….we are still here!  Your District Executives have returned from furlough, rested and ready to go!  They are here to support your needs, answer your questions and to help you keep Scouting strong.  Please reach out if there is anything they can do for you.  If needed arrangements can be made for contactless drop off or pick up of paperwork from the Council Office by appointment only Monday through Friday 8:30 to Noon. Please call our main number to schedule a time. (916-929-1417)

With a number of fundraisers postponed or canceled, our Annual Friends of Scouting Campaign slowed and many activities postponed, the economic impact to our council is significant.  As your family is able, your support now is needed now more than ever so we can continue to deliver Scouting today and in the future.  Over the next few weeks the Council will be reaching out to ask for your support.

Together we can ensure that Scouting will continue to thrive during these challenging times.

Thank you,

The Golden Empire Council Leadership Team

Chuck Brasfeild

Chuck Brasfeild Promoted to New Council

A letter from our Council Chairman and Council President:

Dear friends in the Golden Empire Council,

It is rare that “advancement” leaves us with mixed feelings, but that is the case today.  Our Scout Executive Chuck Brasfeild has accepted a position as Scout Executive in the Denver Area Council.  This is a much larger council which will offer new challenges for Chuck.  BSA has been urging him to ascend to a bigger Council for a few years,  and he has been able to stave them off, until now.

Chuck has served with great distinction as the Scout Executive for the Golden Empire Council for the past 6 years.   Kelly is proud to have been on the Committee that hired Chuck, because he was exactly the type of leader we needed.  Mike has enjoyed the time working with Chuck from the beginning of his time here.  During his time with us, he has made substantial improvements to our camp properties, lead the Council to multiple years of membership growth, recruited a strong executive board, and helped us achieve four years of JTE Gold.  It’s easy to see how his performance would catch the eye of other larger Councils.  In some ways, we are shocked we were able to hold them off this long!

While we are sad to see Chuck and his family leave California, we wish him well and will always appreciate his contributions to the GEC.

Chuck will be with us until the end of May.  A Committee is being formed to find the next Scout Executive for the Golden Empire Council.

Please join us in thanking Chuck and his family for their contributions to Scouting and to the Golden Empire Council!  He leaves us in a strong position for the future!  Good luck in Denver, Chuck!

YIS,

Kelly Brothers                                        Mike Boggs

Scouting Magazin going Digital

Scouting Magazine Going Digital

From Scouting Magazine:

It's no secret that the Scouting movement is going through some interesting times.  Changes have been made, changes are being made and changes will continue to be made, all with the common goal of better serving our mission.

You'll notice a change in Scouting magazine as well.  The May-June 2020 issue will be the last printed issue of this storied publication.  The end of Scouting?  Hardly.  Instead of this magazine being delivered to you five time a year, you will get almost instantaneous access to the content that has made and will continue to make Scouting - and Scouting- great.  You will have choices:

  • A digital version of this magazine, now available for free on just about any device, will continue to deliver the great long-form and feature content you've told us you love.
  • The website, scoutingmagazine.org, will be updated almost daily with the latest and greatest Scouting content around.
  • And we will continue to evolve our online presentations to maintain Scouting's status as your flagship source of Scouting news and resources.

As always, thank you so much for all you do for Scouting - past, present, and future.  You are guiding the next generation of leaders. And, as for the 107 years, we at Scouting magazine will be with you every step of the way.

Jamboree 2021

National Jamboree 2021

Save the date!  National Jamboree is July 21 – 30 in 2021 but we are planning now!  If you have interest in serving as one of the adult leaders, being on the committee to help our youth get to the Jamboree or think that your Scout might be interested, please click here to go to our National Jamboree webpage.  We expect our travel quotes to be in soon and are ready to get started.

What is Jamboree?  The National Scout jamboree is a gathering, or jamboree, of thousands of members of the Boy Scouts of America, usually held every four years and organized by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  Scouts from all over the United States will come together for 10 days of fun and fellowship at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.  The Summit is bursting with so many Scout activities, that it is almost impossible to do them all.  Scuba, zip lines, BMX Bikes, Climbing and Rappelling, Shooting Sports, Arena Shows, and more await your Scouts, so be on the lookout for more information as the registration process goes live in the next few months.  The Golden Empire Council contingent will consist of 220 Scouters, Venture Scouts, and both Boy and Girl Troops from Scouts, BSA.

Golden Empire Council – BSA earned the 2018 & 2019 Platinum Seal of Transparency, from GuideStar, the world’s largest source of nonprofit information. By sharing these metrics, we’re helping the nonprofits like ours to move beyond simplistic financial ratios to assess nonprofit progress.

We chose to display quantitative metrics such as…

  • Number of Campers enrolled
  • Number of youth receiving services, and
  • Number of youth-lead community service projects

…to represent how hard Golden Empire Council – BSA is working to achieve our mission.  We also secured enough recommendations from volunteers to earn the ‘Top Rated’ designation form GuideStar’s partner organization Great Nonprofits.

We’re proud to use GuideStar Platinum to share our full and complete story with the world. To reach the Platinum level, we added extensive information to our Nonprofit Profile: basic contact and organizational information; in-depth financial information; quantitative information about goals, strategies, and progress toward our mission.   More than 8 million visitors per year and a network of 200+ partners use GuideStar data at www.guidestar.org to grow support for nonprofits.

Now Golden Empire Council – BSA members, supporters and potential donors can find in-depth information about our goals, strategies, capabilities, and progress. We’re shining a spotlight on the difference we help make in the world. Please check out our GuideStar Nonprofit Profile and tell us what you think: https://www.guidestar.org/profile/7270989
