COVID-19 update

Golden Empire Council Covid-19 June 1st Update

As our community and local economy continues to address the public health crisis, we remain committed to supporting the delivery of Scouting to our local families.  Over the past weeks we have seen our Scouts and Scouters come together in ways never before imagined, continuing to offer outstanding programs for our youth.  The Golden Empire Council is continuing to monitor the situation.  As the health and safety of our Scouts is the most important thing to us, we will be following the government and local health department suggestions concerning the return to a more normal program.

Effective May 22nd, the County of Sacramento eased guidelines which will allow us to begin the process of reopening the Council Service Center. The office portion of the Council Service Center will be reopening for Scouting business on June 8th. In the meantime, your District Executives are working hard and ready to assist you!  They are here to support your needs, answer your questions and to help you keep Scouting strong.  Please reach out to them if there is anything they can do for you.

In Person Scouting Events

As of today, the State of California still prohibits the gathering of non-family members in an outdoor environment even in situations where safe social distancing is being observed.  This prohibits us from holding in-person scouting events.  However, that does not mean we have to stop Scouting, far from it!  Visit our website and Council Facebook page for ideas on how to keep Scouting Virtually and At-Home.

Council Office Update

The Golden Empire Council office will be reopening in full on June 8th. In an effort to maintain the health and safety of our Scouting family and staff, we will ask that you please follow social distancing guidelines by remaining six feet apart and please wear a mask when in the Council office.

Scout Shop Updates

The River City Scout Shop in Sacramento will be reopening to the public June 9th aligning with the Council Office reopening!  The River City Scout shop will be following all community health guidelines, more information from the RCSS will be available later this week

Our Nor Cal Scout Shop in Chico, CA is still taking phone orders Wednesday through Friday Noon to 6PM and Saturday 10AM-2PM.  You can place your order by calling 530-809-0400.  Please expect to pay a $10 Shipping and Handling fee to every order regardless of shipping location.

Thank You

Thank you to our Leaders, Scouts and their families for continuing to provide an outstanding program for our youth in these unusual times.  Together we can ensure Scouting continues to thrive!

Membership fee changes

BSA Membership Fee Changes

Information updated on 6/1/2020.

Over the last few months, we have seen the Scouting community come together, even while physically apart, to bring solutions, relief and comfort to those in need. From making masks to supporting food banks, Scouting has been a vital partner for communities across the country.

The value of Scouting is undeniable for those within the program and the greater public, and we are committed to continuing to offer this unmatched opportunity to young people and families nationwide.

The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) has worked to keep the membership fee as low as possible. Unfortunately, operating costs have continued to rise and COVID-19 has compounded the need to increase the fee to maintain the program.

To ensure we have the resources to fulfill the promise of Scouting, the updated national membership fee is

  • $66 for Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts participants
  • $42 for Exploring participants
  • $30 for council-paid memberships
  • $42 for all adult volunteers (includes cost of background check)
  • $75 for a unit charter fee

The membership fees will take effect August 1, 2020, for new members in the 2020-2021 program year. For renewing members, the new fee will take effect on October 1, 2020. The updated unit charter fee will take effect August 1, 2020, for all new and rechartering units.

Starting August 1, 2020, there will also be a one-time $25 joining fee for new program participants in Cub Scouts, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouts; however, there is no joining fee for Exploring participants, participants previously registered in any BSA program, those transferring from one program to another, council-paid memberships, or adult volunteers.

See an infographic explaining these updates.

National Jamboree 2021

Save the date!  National Jamboree is July 21 – 30 in 2021 but we are planning now!  If you have interest in serving as one of the adult leaders, being on the committee to help our youth get to the Jamboree or think that your Scout might be interested, please click here to go to our National Jamboree webpage.  We expect our travel quotes to be in soon and are ready to get started.

What is Jamboree?  The National Scout jamboree is a gathering, or jamboree, of thousands of members of the Boy Scouts of America, usually held every four years and organized by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America.  Scouts from all over the United States will come together for 10 days of fun and fellowship at the Summit Bechtel Reserve in West Virginia.  The Summit is bursting with so many Scout activities, that it is almost impossible to do them all.  Scuba, zip lines, BMX Bikes, Climbing and Rappelling, Shooting Sports, Arena Shows, and more await your Scouts, so be on the lookout for more information as the registration process goes live in the next few months.  The Golden Empire Council contingent will consist of 220 Scouters, Venture Scouts, and both Boy and Girl Troops from Scouts, BSA.
