Silver Beavers

Silver Beaver Nominations Due September 30th

Each year at the Council Dinner we honor our most dedicated volunteers with the Silver Beaver Award.  Recipients are nominated by fellow Scouters to receive this award.  During the past year, many of our volunteers have gone above and beyond to find ways to provide creative program opportunities to our Scouts.  Others have spent years planning Day Camps, Camporees, and other major activities.  Please take a few moments to think about these special volunteers and thank them by nominating them for a Silver Beaver Award.  All nominations must be received by September 30th.  The dinner will be held in February.

We Want YOU!
Calling All Scouters to the GEC Fall Membership Drive

Do you know a youth that should be in a Scouting Unit but hasn’t found us yet?

As part of the Golden Empire Council’s Strategic Plan, we have set an ambitious goal around increasing our membership and the number of units we serve. This will allow us to bring the Scouting program to more families within our communities.

While the Council Membership Team is working hard on providing webinars, appearing at Rountables, and connecting with District leaders in this important recruiting season, we also need your help.

What Can YOU Do?

While planning is important and necessary, it can’t take the place of boots on the ground and word-of-mouth recruiting.  If every Unit just added two new members for every five they currently have, we can achieve our goal.

That’s it!  Just add two new members for every FIVE you already have!

We know these unique times presents new challenges to our traditional recruitment process. But we also know, Scouting is still the best character-building program available to our youth. In a groundbreaking two-year study, Tufts University surveyed Cub Scouts and Non Scouts.

What did they find?

The study proved kids in Cub Scouts became significantly more cheerful, helpful, kind, obedient, trustworthy, and hopeful about their future than non-Scouts. (Recognize any of those attributes from the Scout Law?)

Scouts were also more likely than non-Scouts to embrace positive social values. Ask a Scout what’s most important to them,  they were more likely to respond with answers like “helping others” or “doing the right thing.” Ask a non-Scout the same thing, and they were more likely to say “being smart,” “being the best” or “playing sports.”

Our youth are ready and eager to get outside and do fun things with their friends!

Your District leaders can help you with more specifics on how to recruit in your area.  Contact your Unit Commissioner or District Executive to find out how YOU can help GEC meet our Membership goals and bring the Scouting program to more youth!

'GECBSA1' on Facebook!

For reasons that we're still not aware of the folks at Facebook decided on 6-30-2021 to 'UnPublish' Golden Empire Council's long-time and rather popular page.  We complained, we appealed, we've tried everything we could think of, but no interest, no response...

On August 1, 2021 we announced our 'replacement page' named GECBSA1 (<-- Click to visit now)

So, please look for the new 'replacement page' [Like] it, and help us regain the nearly 3,000 likes that were accumulated by the suddenly turned-off page.

Eagle Project Survives Fire

Eagle Scout project still stands after devastating California fire

In 2018, the Camp Fire destroyed more than 150,000 acres in northern California, making it one of the deadliest and costliest wildfires in U.S. history.

A few of the more than 18,000 buildings destroyed in the conflagration belonged to Our Savior Lutheran Church and School in Paradise, Calif. The sole surviving structure on the property was a large wooden cross situated in front of the parking lot. That cross is an Eagle Scout project, which still stands in front of the church after it reopened last month.

Letter to Supporters

A letter to our Supporters

During these unique times, it’s often easy to forget that as Scouts and Scouters we belong to a larger Scouting community. These families, much like yours, believe in the Scouting program and continue to donate their time, talent, and treasure.

Since 1910, the Boy Scouts of America continues to instill young people with the values of loyalty, honesty, integrity, a deep love for the outdoors, and respect for our country. Friends of Scouting is the annual giving campaign to support the Golden Empire Council. Even during these unprecedented times, the cost of the Scouting program has not changed. $250 is still the cost of providing the scouting program to 1 Scout for 1 year. Please know that your direct support allows us to continue our mission and grow Scouting in our community.

There are several ways to donate now.

  1. Mail your donation to Po Box 13558 Sacramento, Ca 95853
  2. Text gecfos2021 to 844-615-4269
  3. Scan this code to donate online:

Please consider giving all that you can. While much of the world has stopped, our mission of scouting will not and has not paused. We hope that you can find peace knowing that scouting continues because of your generosity.  Your contribution allows us to bridge the gap and continue our mission. The world needs scouting now more than ever.

If you have already made a contribution to the Golden Empire Council, we thank you for your support.

Yours in Scouting,

Golden Empire Council

Golden Empire Council

Have you ever heard the term Scouting is a Game with a Purpose?  Does it mean as adult scouters we should be teaching our youth as we lead them?  Do you understand the Vision and Mission of the Boy Scouts of America?  What is your Vision for Scouting?  These just a few of the leadership concepts we will be experiencing at the Fall Wood Badge Course.  If you can use a few more tools to make Scouting and your life a bit easier, please join us later this month, September 24-26 at Camp Lassen and October 2-3, at Nor Cal Adventure Area.

Remember all youth deserve a trained leader.  Why not be the best you the can for them?  They will benefit from your dedication to this training.  Wood Badge is the Premier Scout Training Experience offered by the Golden Empire Council.  I encourage you to join us in this fun filled 5-day exploration and activities centered around servant leadership and how we can better serve ourselves and our Scouts.  If you are not sure or have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me via text, email, or phone call.  Thank you for your time and dedication to Scouting!  Russ Erickson, 530-228-4611, Wood Badge - Fall 2021 Registration (

Platinum, Top-rated, Reviewed

GEC-BSA is investment ready....

Golden Empire Council just re-qualified for it's '2021 GuideStar Platinum' rating of transparency, and hopes to soon earn '2021 TOP-RATED' status with 'Greatnonprofits'.

If we add these recognitions to our local ‘Reviewed’ status with the 'Sacramento Region Community Foundation', and the BSA’s own Council Journey to Excellence GOLD
(For 2016 thru 2019 and now discontinued for Councils) it’s a powerful endorsement to donors that we are worthy of their investments.

Thanks again for all those who have helped
and are helping us re-qualify for 2021!

The Patrol Method...

The First Patrol of female scouts at Camp

Pictured below with two other 2021 Camp Cody patrols are the:

Troop 78 Wondering Wolves

"The Wondering Wolves were one of the top patrols in patrol competition at Camp (this) ..Summer. The Wondering Wolves were (also) the first Patrol of female scouts to stay at Camp Cody for Summer Camp. They impressed everybody ... even the skeptics, about having “Girls in Camp”.
--  Chas Murphy, Committee Chair

"I have been asked to share my photographs and thoughts on our program with the GEC-BSA. What I want to do is teach and encourage others to use photography as a tool to reinforce their Scouting Program. I found during my time as Scoutmaster, that a scoutmaster can use photography to help model the 'Ideals of Scouting'. As a Scoutmaster you may observe something that you think might be a teachable moment or an example of a virtue of the program. Shoot it! Share it, on your website on a slide show to the troop, in emails or Troop Social Media and to SocialMedia@GEC-BSA.Org . The power of a good photograph is that you don't have to say a lot of words about it, it will tell the story itself."
