Training Overview
To become a trained Adult leader in Boy Scouts requires a mix of online training and live coursework. Getting trained doesn't really take that much time and it can be a lot of fun! The bottom line is that every Scout deserves a trained leader.

The following lists outline the courses required for each position for the minimum training qualification:
Cub Scouting All Leaders: - available online: Fast Start (by position) Youth Protection Training This is Scouting - available as a class: Position Specific Training Baloo or Webelos Outdoor Training (if you want to go camping with your cubs.)
Boy Scouting & Varsity Scouting All Leaders: - available online: Fast Start (by position) Youth Protection Training This is Scouting - available as a class Position Specific Training Outdoor Leader Skills (for Scoutmasters, Asst. Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, and Asst. Varsity Coaches)

For Boy Scouting, Varsity Scouting, and Venturing, additional HAT training for areas of activity and interest are optional, but recommended.

Online Training
The following courses are available directly from the BSA Online Learning Center and in the comfort of your own home at www.myscouting.org. At the end of each course, please print out completion certificate as proof of training for your records. You may need to provide a copy to your District Training Chair as well, as proof for additional training.
Cub Scout Fast Start, Boy Scout Fast Start, and Venturing Fast Start present the basics to help the new leader get a general understanding of the program they are just getting started in.
Youth Protection Training is designed to bring an awareness of how we as leaders need to be sensitive to the vulnerability of youth and how to protect them from other youth as well as adults. This is a must in our day in age.
This is Scouting (formerly New Leader Essentials) is designed for all volunteers in all programs. It provides the basics of the Scouting programs, the age appropriateness of those programs, and our values and methods.
Safety Afloat, Safe Swim, Climb on Safely, Physical Wellness, Trek Safely, and Weather Hazards are all outdoor training courses. These training give leaders the basics for taking scouts into the out-of-doors.

The District offers 3 full classroom training days a year for Scouters living in different parts of the District.
Additionally, two Outdoor focused training weekends are offered each year:

Position Specific Training is designed for all volunteers in all programs. This training goes beyond This is Scouting, provided detailed training specific to each adult position. All Scoutmasters, Assistant Scoutmasters, Varsity Coaches, and Assistant Varsity Coaches must also complete the Outdoor Leader Skills course to complete their Basic Leader Training. Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is required for Cub Scout Leaders who want to take their Wolves and Bears camping. For the Cub Scout Leader with the desire to plan and carry out an outdoor experience for the pack, and for anyone who wants to understand the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA Outdoor Program.
Outdoor Leader Skills Training is a course required for those working in the outdoor program with youth, this training is required for your position. Each unit must have at least one person trained in the appropriate outdoor program. All Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters must take this course to complete their Basic Leader Training.
Webelos Outdoor is a training session offered for Webelos Leaders that covers the outdoor section in the Webelos program
Den Chief Training is a one day training course for Den Chiefs in Cub Scout packs. Excellent for developing young leaders.
Council Courses:
Wood Badge for the 21st Century is the advanced training program for all Scouters involved in the BSA programs. The primary purpose of the Wood Badge experience is to strengthen Scouting in our units, districts, and local councils. The Wood Badge "Ticket" represents the participant's commitment to complete a set of personal goals relating to that individual's Scouting position. Upon completion of the Wood Badge "Ticket" as certified by a coach/counselor and the Scout Executive, the participant will be presented with the Wood Badge certificate, neckerchief, woggle, and beads at an appropriate public (beading) ceremony.
National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT) is an exciting, action-packed program designed to provide youth members of the Boy Scouts of America leadership skills and experience that they can use in their home troops, teams, and crews, and in other situations demanding leadership of themselves and others. The training is for Scouts ages 13 and up and is the follow up to the Troop Leader Training program done in the scouts home unit.
High Adventure Team (HAT) Courses:
Basic Backpacking Awareness is designed to provide the knowledge and skills that Scouting leaders need to lead all lengths of backpacking outings. In addition to supplemental information in the areas already covered, the course includes material on trail profile, leadership, equipment care and an introduction to HAT First Aid.
Cold Weather Camping Awareness (OKPIK) is designed to provide to Scouting leaders, the knowledge and skills that will aid them in the planning and execution of winter outings in the snow. It consists of two sessions, an all-day indoor session where you will learn skills specific to snow backpacking/camping and a weekend overnight backpack where you will put the skills to use in the real world. In addition to specific information to supplement the skills areas already covered in Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills, new areas such as snow shoeing, emergency survival and ski safety will be included among others.
Paddle Sports Awareness is designed to provide to Scouting leaders, the knowledge and skills that will aid them in the planning and execution of water-based outings. It consists of two sessions, an evening indoor session where you will learn specific skills and be swim checked, plus a Saturday practical session on the water where you will put the skills to use in the real world. In addition to specific information to supplement the skills areas already covered in the Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills course, new areas such as boat handling and selection will be covered.
Climbing is the Boy Scouts of America's recommended training course to teach the proper procedures for conducting BSA climbing/rappelling activities at a natural site or a specifically designed facility such as a climbing wall or tower.
Wilderness First Aid is an outdoor oriented first aid training program expanding on the skills presented in the "First Aid Basics" class. It includes all of the material from "When Help is delayed" along with additional skills from the Emergency Response program.
This is a 16-hour first aid course for backcountry situations when EMS is not readily available. The course meets the current requirements for Philmont Scout Ranch and other BSA high adventure programs.
