About the BSA Leave No Trace Trainer Course

In this course, participants will learn about Outdoor Ethics skills with a focus on the seven Leave No Trace Principles.  The course also focuses on teaching techniques and learning styles so that participants will be well equipped after the course to instruct others in outdoor ethic skills in a fun and engaging way.  Participants will leave the course with a deeper understanding of Leave No Trace and the ability guide others in making good choices to minimize outdoor impacts and to help protect the wonderful outdoor locations we choose to enjoy.  Whether you have little experience or are an expert in Outdoor Ethics, there will be something new for you to learn in this class.

The course is an official BSA-sponsored training course.  Participants who complete this course will be recognized as a “Leave No Trace Trainer” and will be capable of teaching Outdoor Ethics skills to both Scouting audiences in their unit and district as well as the general public.

Who should sign up?

The course is recommended for scouts age 14 and older who are currently serving or are interested in serving as their Troop’s Outdoor Ethics Guide.  The course is also recommended for adult leaders who are serving as an advisor to youth in Outdoor Ethics leadership roles.  Adult leaders who are interested in teaching Outdoor Ethics at the district level should also take the course.  The National BSA's Outdoor Ethics Task Force as well as the Golden Empire Council has the goal of maintaining one or more Leave No Trace Trainers per district.

What to expect?

Overnight camping is required, and participants will need to supply their own camping gear and meals.  Participants need to prepare a presentation on one of the seven LNT principles and present it during the weekend.  Course staff will contact participants before the indoor session for selecting a presentation topic and to go over other course logistics.
