Cub Scout Leader Training

Welcome to the wonderful world of Cub Scouting. Eager and energetic boys will be looking to you for fun, adventure, and leadership. Have no fear, there is plenty of training and resources available to make you a great success!

Step 1 - Fast Start Training

Fast Start is a program designed to help you get up and running as a Scout leader. You'll find out about the Cub Scout program and the specific responsibilities of your job, be it Cubmaster, Assistant Cubmaster, or many of the other positions available to adult leaders.

Some of the topics discussed in the Fast Start Training are:

      • How a pack meeting is conducted
      • How an outdoor activity is conducted
      • How the pack is organized

Cub Scout Fast Start Training is available on videotape from your district training staff (call the Scout Service Center at 916-929-1417), or you can take it online. You can start right now!

Cub Scout Fast Start Training is available through the BSA Online Learning Center (olc.scouting.org).  If you are a registered scouter it will automatically update your training records.

Step 2 - New Leader Essentials (Basic Leader Training Part I)

New Leader Essentials is the first part of the BSA Basic Leader Training and is typically taken once as an Adult leader with the Boy Scouts of America. After lots of discussion and activities, you'll walk away with a number of resources that you'll use over and over again.

Here are some of the topics you'll be discussing:

      • What are the goals I'm trying to accomplish?
      • How do youth grow and develop?
      • Where do I fit in?
      • Who pays for Scouting?
      • How do I keep Scouting safe?
      • Your bridge into Scouting.
      • Additional Program-specific topics.

Step 3 - Cub Scout Leader Specific Training gets you up to speed in your new Cub Scout position. This training is focused on teaching the new leader, or leader in a new position, just how easy and fun Cub Scouting can be! This training is offered in five different formats, tailor made for you and your busy schedule. All formats are less than 3 hours, and are offered for Tiger Den Leaders, Cub Scout Den Leaders, Webelos Den Leaders, Cubmasters, and Pack Committee Members. Assistant leaders should take the training for the leader position they are assisting.

Once you have completed New Leader Essentials and Cub Scout Leader Specific Training for your position, you are a Trained Cub Scout leader and can wear the Trained patch for your position!

Step 4 - Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation

For the Cub Scout Leader with the desire to plan and carry out an outdoor experience for the pack, and for anyone who wants to understand the focus of the Cub Scout level of the BSA Outdoor Program. Some of the benefits of BALOO training include:

      • Acquire the skills and confidence necessary to plan and carry out a successful Cub Scout-level overnight activity.
      • Increase your knowledge of the resources available from the BSA for carrying out this activity.

Check the calendar for a list of upcoming BALOO training dates.
